Was Teddy Right?
I think that the muckrakers as a group are obviously in it to make a difference in the world. If we wanted fame and fortune, many of us wouldn't of used fake names or pen names. Carry A Nation made many points but kept his or her identity a secret. If she wanted to be recognized, she could have. William Graham Sumner also made a claim that 'interfering with [social darwinisim] would produce survival of the unfittest' He is already successful. Changing the ways of society wouldn't really effect him. He's only saying this because he clearly wants what is best for our country. I think the same of Andrew Carnegie's quote. There were many of us muckrakers, and we would not of worked as hard as we did just for self-gain. We wanted a change in our country, so thats what we worked for.
Political Bosses? Corrupt?
Question 1: What goal do you align with?
I, Mary Church Terell, would have to say that the goal of progressivism in which my line of work best aligns with would be 'Promote Moral Improvement' because I worked with many organizations which fought for women's rights and participated in many demonstrations and pickets.
Question 2: Were Political Bosses Corrupt?
I, personally believe that political bosses were indeed corrupt because everything they were doing was in their own interest, not the interest of everyone else. In document A, Lincoln Steffens states that the typical american 'business man' believes that a bribe is bad unless you're the one giving it, which just shows that if something was in the interest of themselves the political bosses weren't below doing those corrupt acts.
